Desert Research Center participated in a consultative workshop for the project “Promotion of sustainable rangeland management and restoration strategies and practices in the northwest coastal region of Egypt”, held at the Center for Sustainable Development of Matrouh Resources.
The workshop was convened by the West Asia Regional Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and was attended by governmental and research bodies, civil society organizations, and experts concerned with rangeland development.
The workshop aimed to gather the views of representatives of executive bodies and civil society organizations on the project’s activities, identify priorities and expected results, discuss the challenges facing natural pastures in the Northwest Coast, and explore mechanisms for developing an implementation plan for their rehabilitation and management.
Dr. Mohamed Draz, former President of Desert Research Center, delivered a speech on behalf of Dr. Hossam Shawky, the current President, emphasizing that the development and rehabilitation of natural rangelands is a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development in desert regions.
During the workshop, the launch of the second phase of the Northwest Coast Rangeland Development Project was announced, which comes as a complement to the state’s efforts to protect and develop natural resources, promote sustainable rangeland management, and support livestock and local communities, in a way that contributes to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt’s Vision 2030.
