United Nation convention to combat Desertification ( UNCCD )
Egypt ratified the UNCCD in 1995. This convention defined desertification as phenomenon and combating desertification as activities that aimed at :
a)Prevention and/ or reduction of land degradation .
b)Rehabilitation of partly-degraded lands .
c)Reclamation of desertified lands.
* The state assigned the responsibility for the implementation of the Convention to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation in 2001.
* Desert Research Center was assigned to be the National Focal Point Coordinator for the Convention.
* A Ministerial Decree was issued to establish a national coordinating committee chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, comprising representatives of ministries, governmental and non-governmental organizations and various scientific centers ,as well as some experts on Sciences which are associated with desertification.
* The same decree included the formation of a Scientific Committee made up of a group of scientists and researchers from Egyptian universities and scientific organizations which are experienced in the field of desertification.
