AECID and ICARDA in the New Valley to Inspect Innovative desert Agriculture Project

The Sustainable Development Center for New Valley Resources, affiliated with the Desert Research Center, hosted a delegation from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA)

Dr. Hosam Shawky, President of Desert Research Center, stated that this visit aims to enhance scientific cooperation with international organizations. This contributes to advancing sustainable agricultural development efforts through the application of integrated, innovative farming technologies to achieve food security and adapt to climate change impacts. He noted that the project is funded by the Spanish Agency

During a field tour, to inspect the activities of the project “Innovative Desert Agriculture for Resilient Livelihoods” , which is being implemented in the New Valley and Aswan governorates, the delegation was briefed on several agricultural technologies used, which focus on the optimal use of water resources and enhancing the fertility of desert soils. The delegation also learned about integrated farming systems, including Azolla cultivation, fodder and organic fertilizer production from local resources, and livestock breeding

The AECID and ICARDA delegation expressed admiration for the significant progress in the project’s implementation and the effectiveness of the applied innovative methods

The visit concluded with a meeting between Major General Mohamed Al-Zamlout, Governor of New Valley, and the visiting delegation
