Desert Research Center announced the successful drilling of two groundwater wells in the Farafra area, New Valley Governorate, at depths ranging from 720 to 750 meters, following the directives of Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Mr. Alaa Farouk. The project is part of DRC’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agricultural development in Egypt’s desert regions
One of the wells will serve the local community, while the other is allocated to the Egyptian Food Bank, providing a permanent water source to support agricultural activities and strengthen food security
Dr. Hosam Shawky, President of DRC, stated that the project was carried out based on comprehensive geological, hydrogeological, and geophysical studies to identify optimal drilling locations and ensure the sustainable use of the groundwater reservoir
Dr. Ahmed Nasr, Supervisor of the Drilling Unit, added that the team successfully penetrated the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer, and the wells are now operating efficiently, producing low-salinity water (300–350 ppm) suitable for irrigation. This achievement contributes to expanding cultivated areas and boosting agricultural development in Farafra
