FAO honours outstanding research achievements of Desert Research Centre during World Food Day 2024 celebration

On the occasion of World Food Day 2024, Dr. Abdelhakim Elwaer, Assistant Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa, honoured some researchers from Desert Research Centre

Dr. Amal Omar, Head of the Soil Fertility and Microbiology Department, was honoured for her role in increasing the productivity of strategic crops through the development of bio–fertilizers and nano-fertilizers for saline soils, that contributed in achieving the highest productivity of wheat and beans in Sinai Peninsula and the New Valley region. Also, Dr. Amira Shukry, Assistant Professor of Food Processing, was honoured for her efforts in enhancing food security and increasing awareness and empowering women in desert areas

Dr. Ibrahim Shawky, researcher in the field of livestock and genetics, was recognized for his contribution in improving animal breeds, especially in desert areas, by using modern genetic techniques such as complete genome scanning and studying mutations related to traits such as growth traits, animal weight and milk properties

The celebration was held at FAO Regional Office in Cairo, in presence of Dr. Saad Moussa, Supervisor of External Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation , and with the participation of representatives of ministries, government agencies, international organizations, and diplomatic missions, in addition to a number of media professionals and university students, under the slogan “The Right to Food
