Desert Research Center Explores Cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Dr. Hossam Shawky, President of Desert Research Center, met with Dr. Hani El Shaer, Regional Director of the IUCN’s West Asia Office, during his visit to the center.

The visit was part of the IUCN’s role in supporting efforts to conserve ecosystems and promote innovative nature-based solutions, as well as developing regional and international partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The visit included discussions on opportunities to implement joint research projects, exchange scientific and technical expertise, and support capacity building in arid, semi-arid, and extremely arid regions.

The two sides also discussed opportunities for cooperation within the framework of projects funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), in light of the preliminary studies and field surveys being conducted by Desert Research Center’s research teams in South Sinai. These studies aim to provide a scientific database to support project development and prioritize interventions, thus opening the door for joint cooperation with the IUCN in the coming phases.
