Desert Research Center Celebrates the Egyptian-African Day for Combating Desertification and Drought and Announces the Launch of the First Rangeland Development Association in Egypt, Africa, and the World

As part of the celebration of the 2026 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, which this year is themed “Rangelands Need Care and Development”, Desert Research Center – Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation – organized event to celebrate the Egyptian-African Day for Combating Desertification and Drought.

The celebration reflected Egypt’s growing role in leading regional and African efforts to address the challenges of desertification.

The two-day event was held in Matrouh Governorate. One of its highlights was the announcement of the establishment of the first rangeland development association in Egypt, Africa, and the world, a pioneering step aimed at promoting the sustainable management of natural resources and supporting local communities.

The celebration was attended by Mr. Cheikh Touré, the African Coordinator for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Mr. Mamadou Koto, representing the African Union, and representatives from several African countries.

The guests and participants expressed their appreciation for the Desert Research Center’s expertise and technical and scientific capabilities.

This event underscores Egypt’s position as an active partner in African and international efforts to combat desertification and drought.
